cbc: hockey night in canada – october 6, 2002

last night the queen dropped the puck

at centre ice

taking pointers from her escorts:

hockey coaches; captains;

goalies; and even me.

last night the queen dropped the puck

right in front of:

beer guzzling;

peanut popping;

popcorn chucking;

pot bellied;

and paint stained

all canadian faces.

last night the queen dropped the puck

at general motors:

where the right amount

gets you a nose-bleed seat,

scrounging for a spot to park

along, the border of the downtown eastside

vancouver is ready to host royalty.

as the queen dropped the puck:

junkies blasted under a star-crested night

in andy livingston park

homeless trek back to the georgia viaduct

cut-out cardboard and green shrubs is home sweet home

an addict is holed up in a corner

trying not to think about their next fix

the queen’s viceroy and all her workers

ignore treaties, the right’s of humans…

a list too long to ignore anymore

and, on cbc the crowd goes wild.
