napowrimo – mdaaswi shi niizhwaaswi (seventeen)

the trees stand shoulder to shoulder alongside the road

pockmarked with potholes and salt sprinkled at the edges

left overs from winter can be seen everywhere

in the shrubs are candy wrappers, timmies cups with missing roll up the rims, chip bags, cigarette packages

these are all empty but found their way around the trunk and in the branches

these are not the tree huggers i had in mind

the wind has blown plastic bags and a plethora of wrappers up against the fence

now has a dual purpose not only  keeping out trespassers but also throwaways

snow has to go somewhere so it is dumped in empty lots or underused parking areas

once white, bright and sprinkling like diamonds

as the great snow banks melt

it reveals so much of the dwellers in this nation’s capital
