napowrimo – double dutch – daaswishibezhig giizhgad – day eleven

back in the day,

when me and my cousins were kids

our french (step) grandpa called us little squaws

as we ran outside, skipping ropes in hand

our loud sing-song voices

rock paper scissors

was the final decision on who was gonna

be on each end turning the ropes

some of the neighborhood kids

on colonization road

would meet in our grandma’s dirt driveway

ready to jump rope

we learned double dutch

the faster the ropes turned

passing each other in the air

the faster the jumper

ropes throwing rocks and pebbles

bouncing off grandma’s brown mercury

dust caking around the streams of sweat

as our feet beat against the earth

kicking up dust
